Soccer – Why All The Hype?

Soccer – Why All The Hype?

So, let me start out by saying that I am not going to be stepping on anybody’s corns or creating a firestorm that is hard to control. I am just looking at why there is so much hype over soccer, from my perspective.

Soccer is a very intriguing and exciting sport. Some countries refer to it as football, but they are both the same thing seeing that they use the same type of round ball.

It is quite interesting to note that almost every little boy, and even some girls these days, are interested in playing soccer, be it for fun or looking to make their way to the professional league later on in life.

I was startled to find out that there were so many leagues around the world, like the Premier League, English Football League, UEFA Champions League, EFL Champions, Serie A, LaLiga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, UEFA Europa League, and so on.

The winners and runners-up of the last three seasons of the UEFA Champions League were as follows:

2019‑2020Bayern MunichParis Saint‑Germain1‑0
2018‑2019LiverpoolTottenham Hotspur2‑0
2017‑2018Real MadridLiverpool3‑1

Soccer is a multi-billion dollar business that covers just about every continent, providing jobs for the average Joe to top executives, making money for club owners, the world soccer bodies and associations, the players, vendors, all the way down to the common man on the street.

The sale of various soccer merchandise is driven by the love and passion that billions of people have for the game. Club merchandise sell like hot cakes especially when the World Cup comes around or when people’s favourite clubs are doing very well in their respective leagues.

Take into consideration too that soccer is like an international language. Irrespective of where you are from, anyone can play soccer. If you have a soccer ball, you can run and dribble, pass the ball to your team mates, and you can take shots at a goal (and hopefully score), you are well on your way to being a soccer pro (well, maybe not pro, but you get the drift).

Soccer is also a favourite past-time of millions of people. People like to relax and watch a good soccer match, especially when the rivalry between the teams is intense.

Many of us also like to watch local soccer matches in our home communities, at a park or playground, at a stadium, at the beach, or anywhere that has a surface that allows for the game to be played.

The saying that soccer unites people is also true. It is believed that when major soccer matches are on, the good, the bad, and the ugly all get along for that period. Enemies forget their quarrels, even if only for a short time, once they support the same team or club. Crime goes down and there is a general increase in law and order as everyone watches to see which teams come out on top.

The happy faces one sees at soccer matches, as well as the share of emotions and feelings, transcends races and cultures. We all feel it when our team wins or loses. Many people cry either tears of joy or tears of sadness.

So, why all the hype over soccer? I said quite a few things that show how important it is to people on a whole, as well as the economies of countries involved in this sport.

What say you? Do you love soccer, or football, as some of us call it? And why do you have such an interest in it? I am sure that if you think about it, your answers may be quite surprising.
